Detox Recipes

Detox Salad

Avocado & Tomato Salad With Shallots

(serves 1) You can add mozzarella cheese to this recipe if you wish, for a classic Italian tricolore salad.

ingredients

1 large shallot or
2 smaller ones, peeled and finely chopped
2 tsp balsamic vinegar
3 medium tomatoes, sliced
1 ripe avocado
olive oil
salt & black pepper

Put the finely chopped shallot in a small bowl or container, such as an egg cup, with the balsamic vinegar while you prepare the salad.
Arrange the sliced tomatoes on one side of a plate. Cut the avocado into halves and remove the stone; cut through the flesh to the skin but not through the skin itself. Starting at the pointed end, peel the skin away with your fingers; if the avocado is ripe enough, this should be easy. Arrange the avocado slices on the other half of the plate.
Carefully, using a teaspoon, arrange the chopped shallot in a fine line between the two halves, leaving any excess vinegar behind. Drizzle olive oil over the salad, grind some black pepper over everything and put a little salt on the tomatoes. Serve immediately.

Warm Asparagus & Courgette Salad

(serves 1)Asparagus is high in glutathione, which helps your liver to function effectively, while courgettes are a good source of potassium, betacarotene and vitamin C.

ingredients

6-10 hazelnuts
250g (8oz) bunch of asparagus
1 large handful of salad leaves
½ large courgette
salt & black pepper
For the Dressing:
½ tsp Dijon mustard
½ tsp clear honey
juice of ½ small lemon
1 tsp olive oil
Posted Image

Chop the hazelnuts and then dry-roast them in a non-stick pan; when they start to smell toasted, remove the pan from the heat.
Fill a large pan with water and put it on to boil. Trim the woody ends from the asparagus and then discard them (they can go toward vegetable stock if you wish). Cut the remaining stems halfway along and put the thicker, lower halves into the boiling water for 3 minutes. Now add the rest of the asparagus to the pan of boiling water and cook for 2 minutes.
Make the dressing:
Whisk the mustard, honey, lemon juice and olive oil together until smooth. Arrange the salad leaves on a plate.
Meanwhile, make long strips of courgette with a potato peeler; discard any which are entirely peel and also get rid of the rather seedy core. Add the strips to the asparagus and cook for a further minute.
Drain and allow to cool briefly until the asparagus can be handled, and then arrange both the asparagus pieces and the courgette strips on top of the salad leaves. Whisk the dressing once more and drizzle it over everything, season with salt and black pepper and scatter the hazelnuts on top. Serve immediately.

A detox is the process of stimulating all of the body’s eliminative organs (the liver predominantly) in order to rid the body of any built-up toxicity.
- The liver is the main detoxifying organ of the body: it breaks down and removes microrganisms, chemicals, dead cells, drugs and other debris from the bloodstream.
- If the liver’s detoxification pathways become overloaded, there will be a buildup of toxins in the body.

This may lead to symptoms such as:
  • Nervous System symptoms: depression, fatigue, mood changes, poor concentration, headaches with nausea
  • Immune Dysfunction: allergies, asthma, eczema, sinusitis, hayfever, food sensitivities, fibromyalgia, recurrent viral, fungal or bacterial infections.
  • Digestive Problems: Indigestion, reflux, gallstones, intolerance to fatty foods, intolerance to alcohol, bloating, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome
  • Blood sugar irregularities: sugar cravings, hypoglycaemia
  • Hormonal imbalances: PMS, increased side effects to the OCP or HRT.
  • Other symptoms: bad breath, itchy skin, dark circles under the eyes, excessive/offensive sweating, pale skin.

what kind of detox do you recommend Kretan?

Depends what you are after and how strict you are willing to be. I suggest you never do a full on detox without proper supervision (ie. with strict dietary changes and herbal prescriptions).

However, if I were to simplify it (which would still help the body) the main points are:

- eliminate the toxins you are exposed to whether environmental or ingested : so household chemicals and fragrances, smoking, alcohol, coffee, processed foods, preservatives and additives

- promote liver and gall bladder function : so bitter foods, dark green leafy vegetables, garlic and onion, beetroot, and antioxidant rich foods - so fruits and veges of various bright colours eg. berries, capsicum etc. Also drinking a squeeze of half a fresh lemon in water in the morning can help stimulate liver function (some of you may of heard of this)

- finally you want to promote the expulsion of toxins from your body - plenty of water, fibre and exercise.

i already do the plenty of water/exercise thing ( have oats and fruit for breakfast, i think that covers fibre)...i occasionally will have 1/2 a lemon in my morning water ( i use warm water)

i don't smoke and i don't eat processed foods...my only guilty pleasure is coffee and fragrance :(

maybe i am stupid on this front but ....

"houshold chemicals" ... is that possible? like what?

sure i can undestand smoking ... but alcohol? and i mean things like red wine that is supposed to be beneficial (as opposed to hard liquor whose sole purpose is to get you wasted)

also "preservatives and additives" - are you suggesting nothing in cans, let alone things like cheese , that most have something to "keep them going"

i am serious here

yes eyo - detox isnt forever its for a short time to expel toxins that built up in your body over the years

household chemicals - could be off-gases from newly layed carpet, new paint, polishes, varnishes, cleaning products, bleaches, air freshners

alchol is inflammatory to the body by nature and compromises liver function also - most alcohol contains preservatives too.

re preservatives/additives - if your food has a number on the label then avoid it - the easiest way is not to buy packaged foods and cook/make things from scratch

im happy to answer any more questions you have eyo

shouldnt cook with either because they have a low smoking point and oxidise if heated too much.

Use rice bran or coconut oil - coconut is beneficial as studies should it helps lower bad cholesterol and triglycerides

i am not talking about frying - though that is part of the question - i am talking about general cooking

and why i ask is there is so much noise about meditaranean foods, and lets face it, olive oil is the key ingredient

for light cooking use olive oil eyo then just dont heat it very high

the "traditional" mediterranean diet (albeit the cretan one has had much focus, research and study) is one the most beneficial diets to ones health, like the ones you find in a old village, not from a restaurant along the paralia. The have the right balance of fresh fruit and vegetables, white cheeses, fish, ospria, little red meat, olive oil, honey and herbs and horta etc etc. This diet is beneficial because it is anti-inflammatory, predominantly alkaline, very little saturated fats, good for the heart, brain, blood glucose, etc etc
