A Victorian mother who was a passionate campaigner for home birth support has died after delivering her baby at home.
The coroner will launch an investigation into the death of 36-year-old Caroline Lovell, who was rushed to hospital last Monday and died the following day, the Herald Sun reports.
When paramedics arrived at Ms Lovell's home in Melbourne's north at 10.30am on Monday, she was in a critical condition.
Private midwives had assisted Ms Lovell in the birth of her second daughter, who she had always planned to have at home.
Ms Lovell, who is survived by her husband Nick and daughters Lulu and Zahra, had lobbied the government to provide private midwives with funding and insurance.
A spokeswoman for Midwives in Private Practice said it was the first time she had heard of a mother dying after a home birth in her 15 years of midwifery.
"It's very, very rare and it's just impossible to imagine what might have happened," she said.
Department of Health spokesman Graeme Walker said about 200 women in Victoria planned home births each year, which equated to 0.22 per cent of all births.

we live in a world of support.
unfortunately, some people take this idea of ''natural'' oo far.
natural is good,but within limits.
never when it possibly threatens a life or the wellbeing of someone.
and of course there is an industry behind it and money behind it.
did you hear what the katsika said..? 15 years no death, fat comfort to the person who died !

I Agree 100% with people taking natural too far these days. At work the office manager is a hippy and she unilaterally decided to stock unbleached recycled 1 ply TP. F*CK THAT!!!! I demanded that either we get Quilton 3 ply or better. Recycled TP goes or I do. Quilton 3ply was returned to us and we all lived happily ever after.
Thankyou.
