AFGHAN WOMAN 'KILLED FOR GIVING BIRTH TO GIRL'

Afghan police were on Monday hunting a man who allegedly killed his wife after she gave birth to the couple's third daughter, an official said.
Storay, 30, was beaten to death in the Khan Abad district of the northern province Kunduz last Wednesday after she delivered another baby girl, angering her husband who had wanted a son, police said.
"She was beaten to death by her husband after she gave birth to their third baby girl. We were informed of the case by Storay's father," Sayed Sarwar Husaini, the provincial police spokesman, told AFP.
There were signs of torture on her body, he added.
"Police have arrested Storay's mother-in-law in connection with the case, but her husband has fled. Police are searching for him," Husaini said.
Violence and abuse against women continues to be a major problem in Afghanistan, a decade after US-led troops brought down the Taliban regime.
Last month, police found a teen bride who had been locked in a toilet for six months at her husband's house in neighbouring Baghlan province.
She was burned and beaten, and had her fingernails pulled out.
British charity Oxfam says 87 percent of Afghan women report having experienced physical, sexual or psychological violence or forced marriage. The Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission logged 1,026 cases of violence against women in the second quarter of 2011 compared with 2,700 cases for the whole of 2010.

This study reckons mum's diet plays a role in gender of babies:
Diet may influence the sex of your baby
- 00:01 28 November 2007 by Roxanne Khamsi
A mother's diet in the run-up to conception could influence the sex of her child, suggests a study in mice. The research shows that mice given drugs to lower their blood-sugar levels produced significantly more female than male pups.
The findings lend credence to traditional beliefs that eating certain foods can influence the sex of offspring.
The conventional wisdom is that the father's sperm is the main determinant of the sex of a child. But increasingly scientists have found hints that maternal factors might have an influence too. For example, earlier work has suggested that single mothers are more likely to give birth to daughters.
Elissa Cameron at the University of Pretoria in South Africa and her colleagues wanted to study how changes in diet might influence sex ratios - the proportion of males to females in a population.
To do this, they altered the levels of blood-sugar in female mice during conception, by feeding the mice a steroid called dexamethasone (DEX), which inhibits the transport of glucose into the bloodstream.
Evolutionary advantage
The scientists gave 20 female mice water dosed with DEX for the first three days that the females were exposed to males. Afterwards, the mice were given plain water. Cameron's team measured the blood-sugar levels of these mice, as well as that of 20 control females several times during the experiment.
The average blood-glucose levels in mice that received DEX dropped from 6.47 to 5.24 millimoles/litre. And the team found that 53% of the pups born to the control females mice were male, but only 41% of those born to the mice receiving DEX were male.
Exactly how a drop in blood sugar causes more female births remains unclear. But the opposite also seems to work. A previous study involving diabetic mice, found that rodents with high blood-sugar levels produced more male offspring than expected.
Biologists have theorised that mothers may give birth to more female offspring during times of stress or ill health, because it confers an evolutionary advantage. If the stressed mother gave birth to a weak male, he is unlikely to mate. But if the child was female, no matter how weak, she would likely bear more children.
Fitness marker
"It does seem that sugar levels could act as an indicator of whether a mother is in a good state or bad state," says Ruth Mace at the University College London, UK. Mace previously published a study that found mothers with more muscle mass are more likely to give birth to sons during food shortages.
The idea of diet influencing sex ratio is already part of traditional wisdom. Folklore says that mothers should eat more red meat and salty snacks if they want a boy, and fish, vegetables, chocolates and sweets if they want a girl.
"This is interesting, since meat raises blood sugar for a sustained period of time, whereas sugar-based snacks raise blood sugar very high, but for a short amount of time, followed by a slump in blood glucose," says Cameron.

The X sperm (which are the sperm that make females) live longer than the Y sperm (which are the sperm that make males). However, the Y sperm swim faster, so the chances are equally good that you will get a girl or a boy. If the Y sperm swim fast enough before they die to fertilize the egg, then you'll have a boy. If the Y sperm don't reach the egg before they die, chances are an X sperm will get there shortly, and then you'll have a girl.
Here is more input and advice:
- X sperm are stronger than Y sperm but both will perish very quickly if allowed to dry out.
- The female carrying sperm are the slower sperm because of the genetic material it carries. The female sperm contain an X chromosome, while the male carrying sperm contain a Y chromosome. The Y chromosome is very small and contains very little genetic material in comparison to the X chromosome, so the male carrying sperm are able to swim faster and reach the egg sooner than the X carrying sperm.
- A baby's gender is determined by the chromosomes in the sperm, not the egg. XX makes female, XY makes male, all eggs contain an X chromosome, so sperm donates other X or Y chromosome. Female sperm live up to 5 days, male sperm up to 3 days. (Egg lives 12 to 24, maybe even 36 hours after ovulation.) Female sperm live longer but swim slower than male sperm. (Vaginal environment supposedly contributes to sperm longevity, alkaline/acidic - male sperm prefer baking soda douche prior to sex, female prefer acidic (vinegar) (supposedly) - but most importantly of all, male swim quicker, so for male baby, have sex within 6 hours before ovulation, to beat female sperm to egg. Vice versa, for female baby, have sex 4-5 days before ovulation, for better chances of having a girl baby. Test for ovulation with home ovulation testing kit, get familiar with when you ovulate, and plan accordingly for future ovulations and future timing of intercourse.
- Men produce two types of sperm, those containing the X chromosome, female sperm, and those containing the Y chromosome, male sperm. Sperm are being produced continuously, they take about a month from the beginning until they are mature. As the Y chromosome is smaller than the X chromosome the male sperm is lighter and faster than the female sperm and therefore gets a head start towards the egg. Female sperm being heavier have more staying power and can keep going for longer.
