[Hello Roman and Welcome to GC...................... now i have been reading all the posts on here about you wanting to come over here (only short term). I agree with maniathc and ellin in regards to stay where you are...........stay in greece..........help greece. Thats my opinion....... Like I mentioned to someone whos overseas at the moment couple of weeks ago, Australia is not all it seems....(and everybody whos reading this.......its my opinion)........ Ta pragmata tis afstralia 8a ginoun tora (apo simera) hirotera.......

So Roman, stay in our beautiful country, Greece..... :)
I don't get it.. Do you have an argument to back up this statement? I don't wanna come over to Australia and get married for christ's shake. I just wanna visit the place and get as much as i can from it's culture. I've been googling a lot lately and people seem to dig Australia as it seems to be very relaxed. I can see that there are big differences to Europe but no-one till now gave me a comprehensive statement, analysis or what exactly the pros and cons of Australia are. All i'm seeing is a stupendous Greek - Ghetto mentality with comments such as: don't come here, stay in Greece etc.. Thats appalling. All i'm looking forward to, is to find a job and try to discover Australia, meet new people and have a good time.

Anyway.. I think i'll have to take it on my own from now on :P

First of all, i did not characterise this forum as a "Greek Ghetto", all i meant is that i do not want to visit Australia and hang out all time with Greeks, as that would defeat the purpose of visiting a foreign country.. Second of all, when i initially wrote that i was looking for a place that felt good for Greeks instantly, i meant something with a warm climate and closer to Greece, i know that's probably impossible, but that would help things initially in order to let me settle down more easily.

I just needed to set these things straight in order to fix the false accusations. It seems some people like Ellin apparently, just enjoy bashing-bullying you name it, other people who don't even know.

I've also chosen to speak in English, since i take it there are people that are second generation Australian and might not speak any Greek at all.. I need their opinions as well. And also if i am not wrong, there is no Greek Language support on the board.

I'm not been cocky, i just feel uncomfortable by the fact that there is probably no moderation in these boards and everyone who has apparently gained some status can insult anyone at any time without any consent.

I apologise if i triggered any discomfort to anyone.

Thanks

Roman, no one is insulting you at all or triggered any discomfort. On these forums you will get people with different opinion about a typical topic that will appear to be rude but its not always the case. Where as with Ellin hes been here and he knows and he simply voiced his opinion. At the end of the day Roman, its up to you to take in all that has been said to you about Australia or you just come out here and find out yourself. :) I apologise now if im not making sense hehehehehehe.

Could you roughly name the comparisons between Melbourne and Sydney? I take it as they are the biggest towns in Australia? Which city is better in terms of safety, more accessible (transportation) and climate? I am also up for gigs, theatre, arts etc.. Which city offers more in that section? I've also noticed that the Opera House in Sydney is facing closure? That's kinda sad.

It fells in my perception, that Sydney is sort of the unofficial capital of Australia and there is where everything happens. Is that true?

Thanks for the quick tip.. I was just having a look on google maps and i must say that both cities look gorgeous!

How would you describe Australians as people vs English or Americans? Do they share a similar attitude? I don't really like Americans, as they can be very arrogant some times about their superior nation and even ignorant about other countries and i hate their food habits.. In regards to English, they can be lovely but they can also be snobbish and "stiff upper lip", as their usually referenced.. Would you reckon that Australians are more of a middle between these countries? Do you feel that there is a big resemblance to the British culture, or is it completely different adding a more independent Australian flavour? I've also never got the concept of still having the union jack on the Australian flag. Is that some sort of obedience to U.K. or Australians are just so relaxed that they wouldn't even bother to care about such things?

Thanks again, just trying to collect some info :D

btw, two of my fav bands are Australian.. AC/DC & Silverchair ;)
