Hello , my name is Jim and I'm moving to Sydney this February for postgraduate studies in the University of New South Wales (UNSW) !
So I thought I should say hello to this forum !

And also I wanted to make some questions.

So are there any greek community clubs or something in Sydney , where I can meet other greek immigrants or greek-australians ?

Also I was thinking of maybe getting a part time job, my visa allows me to work for 20 hours per week, any ideas where I shall look and what kinda jobs are suitable for students -- even perhaps ones that have to do with being able to speak greek ?

And finally any tips or suggestions for making the life in Sydney easier the first days are welcome !

congratulations on your move, what a great experience. There are a lot of Greeks in Kingsford/Kensington but also a lot of kinezi.. UNSW has a lot of kinezi what are you studying?

Do you have any relatives or friends in Sydney?

Also try Greekcity Chat you can go on line and chat to Greeks and they too can tell you the latest places they hang around..

As for looking for work there aren't that many places that speak Greek, unless you can get a job for a Greek newspaper or maybe one of the nightclubs. ie.e cypriot club, lemnos club and there are others you can seek them out when you get here.

I'm not involved in Sydney's Greek community!!! As Spezza about that, he is heavily involved in Sydney's Greek community (but only if it's about soccer!).
Από εκεί και πέρα... εγώ μεγάλωσα στην Ελλάδα και ήρθα εδώ πριν 2 χρόνια σε αντίθεση με τον Μανιάτη που είναι περήφανος Αυστραλός γεννημένος και μεγαλωμένος εδώ.
Μπορείς να πας σε Greek Clubs που θα βρεις πολλούς Ελληνες.

Δουλειές υπάρχουν άπειρες... ανάλογα τώρα τι θες να κάνεις και τι μπορείς να κάνεις βέβαια.
Σημαντικό... έχεις κανονίσει για σπίτι; Αυτό βασικά είναι το πιο δύσκολο πράγμα, να βρεις ένα σπίτι που να σε βολεύει για το UNSW και να μην πληρώνεις τα κέρατα σου.

Εχεις ξαναέρθει εδώ?

Newspaper or nightclubs sound great thanks for the suggestion . Are the nightclubs the same as Greece ? Working every night etc?
I've been told that night life isn't that active in Australia compared to Greece.

Από εκεί και πέρα ρώτα και σου λέμε, αν θες στείλε πμ και κανονίζουμε και πάμε για κανένα καφέ αν θες.

Τζίμη, η σημαντικότερη συμβουλή που μπορούμε να δώσουμε σε έναν Ελλαδίτη που έρχεται Αυστραλία είναι ότι ΤΟ ΚΑΠΝΙΣΜΑ ΑΠΑΓΟΡΕΥΕΤΑΙ, οπότε κανονίσου.

Well some other tips...
You can't find any (decent) food after 9-10pm.
Everyone likes eating at Maccas (yuck).
Pubs/bars/clubs have a lockout after 2am.
You have to look on the RIGHT when crossing a road.

Σε σχέση με Θεσσαλονίκη θα σου φανεί χειρότερα εδώ από θέμα ζωης.
Δεν έχει καφετέριες να πηγαίνουν όλοι για καφέ χαλλλλαρά στη Ροτόντα.
Δεν έχει τα σκυλάδικα που έχει Θεσσαλονίκη.
Δεν έχει ρωσοπόντιους :lol2:
Ε τα άλλα θα τα δεις.

Hi Jim, welcome to Sydney! My son attends UNSW, he is an Arts student. Are you staying on campus? I apologise if someone has asked this before in Greek but I struggle reading the language so I hope you dont mind if I write in English. His Greek unfortunately is not that good either purely because of me not speaking it at home, slack I know. About finding a job, most employers want experience. My son has the RSA and RSG but no-one will employ him as he has never worked behind a bar before. He has been trying to find a part time job for some months now. I hope you find getting a job easier! Great advice everyone.

With regard to the night life of Sydney all you have to do is to not expect too much and you might be pleasantly surprised...

Don't be a stranger when you get to Sydney. Try and visit greekcity every now and then.

Hm I suppose I'll have to settle down first and take some weeks or months before I start looking for part-time jobs since I think my classes will be kinda hard too. Thanks for the advice anyway ! And I'll let you know by the end of February when I'm there so I contact you and your son :)
